Cristina Berteanu – Vocation as Duty, Excellence as Public Responsibility

In the architecture of professional destinies, some careers are built on the solid ground of predictability: a steady ascent within the favorable landscape of the Western world, supported by well-established institutions and ample resources. And then there are those rare individuals who deliberately choose to return where the need outweighs opportunity, and where hope is more fragile than prestige. Dr. Cristina Berteanu belongs to the latter category: professionals for whom excellence is not a privilege, but a daily duty, assumed with rigor, empathy, and vision.

A senior physician in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, with specialization in pain therapy and a PhD in medical sciences, Dr. Berteanu is a recognized leader in both the public and private healthcare sectors in Romania. She never accepted the role of passive observer of the medical realities in her country. After completing advanced training in elite European institutions, in Brussels, Nijmegen, Angers, and Innsbruck, and engaging in postdoctoral research and continuous medical education, she could have pursued a comfortable career abroad. Instead, she chose Romania. Not out of conformity, but out of the profound conviction that a fragile healthcare system can only regenerate from within, through the active and lucid involvement of those who understand medicine as a vital public service.

For more than a decade, as Medical Director of the Neolife Romania network, and since 2024 of the Memorial Romania group, Dr. Cristina Berteanu has coordinated four centers of excellence and contributed directly to the development of six oncology and radiotherapy centers across the country. In September 2025, under her leadership, the multidisciplinary Memorial Citygate Clinic was inaugurated, an emblem of modern medicine in Romania, where oncology care integrates personalized treatments, cutting-edge technology, and psychological support. Each medical center she has helped to establish is more than a healthcare facility; it is a promise fulfilled: that Romanian patients deserve access to international-standard treatments in their own country.

Dr. Berteanu’s work stands at the intersection of innovation, leadership, and empathy. From the introduction of high-precision radiotherapy and advanced imaging technologies (PET-CT, MRI, CT, 3D mammography), to the integration of psycho-oncology and emotional counseling as essential components of care, she continuously redefines the relationship between patients and the healthcare system. In a context where medicine risks becoming a succession of technical protocols, Cristina Berteanu restores what is essential: the humanity of the therapeutic act.

Beyond her clinical role, Dr. Berteanu’s strategic contributions are equally impressive. She played an active part in the development of Romania’s National Cancer Control Plan and supported the institutional recognition of the National Cancer Survivors’ Day, initiatives aimed at acknowledging and protecting the rights of oncology patients. She is also involved in the National Competence Center for Cancer Research, a strategic project funded through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), focused on developing infrastructure for medical research and innovation in Romania.

She holds membership in several national and international professional councils and organizations, including PALMED (The Romanian Private Hospitals Association), and serves on the scientific committees of high-level conferences such as HealthTech Forum, a flagship event dedicated to medtech innovation. As a board member of NYA – Neurodiversity Academ, she advocates for inclusion in healthcare and broadens the framework of medical empathy beyond oncology, toward a comprehensive approach to neuropsychological diversity.

Her academic portfolio includes over 200 scientific papers, contributions to medical textbooks, conferences, and national and international research projects. She serves as editor of the Romanian Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, holds medical patents, and mentors new generations of physicians. Through the R.O.Z. Association (Răbdare, Optimism, Zâmbet – Patience, Optimism, Smile), Dr. Berteanu offers emotional and psychological support to oncology patients and their families, creating a safe and dignified space for recovery and reintegration.

Dr. Cristina Berteanu is a distinct voice in contemporary Romanian medicine, a leader who challenges therapeutic paradigms and redefines the doctor, patient relationship. Through her work, Romania aligns itself with the highest international standards in oncology, transforming excellence from a mere ideal into a tangible reality.

Now in its fifth edition (2025–2026), the Romanian Excellence Campaign, launched by Occidentul Românesc in 2015, reaffirms a fundamental truth: Romanians who build their futures beyond national borders are not lost to their country. On the contrary, they embody the authentic potential of Romania, contributing to the redefinition of its global image.

If, three decades ago, the image of Romanians abroad was often distorted by prejudice, today, thanks to these ambassadors of value: doctors, researchers, engineers, teachers, journalists, artists, legal and business leaders, Romania is increasingly associated with the excellence of its professionals.

Through interviews and events organized annually, the Romanian Excellence Campaign brings to light remarkable figures from the diaspora, highlighting the diversity and complexity of Romanian talent and fostering spaces for recognition, dialogue, and cooperation, between those abroad and those at home.

In this context, Occidentul Românesc is honored to include Dr. Cristina Berteanu among the finalists of the Romanian Excellence Trophy, fifth edition (2025–2026), a recognition of her outstanding contribution to the humanization and modernization of Romania’s healthcare system.
