Romanian Music in Universal Spaces: The Madrigal Choir Celebrates Romania’s National Day Through Art, Heritage, and Cultural Diplomacy
A cultural journey that unites music, heritage, and community: the Madrigal Choir marks Romania’s National Day with premieres and exceptional concerts in Spain.

On the occasion of Romania’s National Day, the “Madrigal – Marin Constantin” National Chamber Choir continues to bring Romanian art to some of the world’s most emblematic stages. On November 25, the ensemble premiered a new episode of the video project “Contemporary Romanian Music in Ancient Universal Spaces,” filmed in the impressive Roman Theatre of Mérida, a two-thousand-year-old amphitheatre included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Launched in 2023 as part of the anniversary program “Madrigal 60,” the project explores the dialogue between ancient cultural heritage and contemporary Romanian creation, blending iconic architectural landmarks with modern, avant-garde compositions.
The new episode, conducted musically by Anna Ungureanu and directed artistically by Emil Pantelimon, features the work “Efemeride” by Anatol Vieru and will officially premiere on January 15, 2026, coinciding with Romania’s National Culture Day.

The Mérida production joins previous recordings made in exceptional locations such as Sarmizegetusa Regia, Machu Picchu, the Pantheon in Rome, and the steppes of Turkestan, strengthening this series as a cultural bridge between universal heritage and contemporary Romanian music.
During the same period, the Madrigal Choir opened its Spanish tour with a series of events dedicated to Romania’s National Day. The first concert, held on November 26 in the majestic Mosque–Cathedral of Córdoba, a UNESCO site, offered a unique acoustic experience that amplified the power and elegance of the choir’s voices, creating a memorable evening for all present. The event was organized by the Consulate General of Romania in Seville and ICR Madrid, with the support of the Embassy of Romania in the Kingdom of Spain.
The tour continued in Madrid, where, on November 28, more than 1,000 attendees participated in the extraordinary concert of sacred music and Christmas carols hosted by the Almudena Cathedral. Beneath the cathedral’s imposing arches, the voices of the Madrigal created a space of profound emotion, an evening devoted to spirituality, tradition, and belonging.

In her welcome speech, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Raluca Mihăilă highlighted the long-standing friendship between Romania and Spain, grounded in trust, closeness, and mutual respect, as well as the essential role of the Romanian community in strengthening these ties throughout 145 years of diplomatic relations.
Cardinal José Cobo Cano also delivered a deeply spiritual message on the importance of unity among people, nations, and communities, perfectly reflecting the spirit of Romania’s National Day.
The Director of ICR Madrid, Maria Pop, emphasized the Madrigal Choir’s music as a symbol of cultural dialogue and hope, underscoring that the choir’s presence in Spain is part of the cultural program of the 2025 Jubilee Year.
The Embassy of Romania in the Kingdom of Spain extends its sincere gratitude to all participating institutions, cultural partners, and members of the diplomatic corps who joined this celebration. The events dedicated to Romania’s National Day brought together art, heritage, and community, reaffirming once again the Madrigal Choir’s status as a true cultural ambassador of Romania to the world.
