Occidentul Românesc – The End of a Printed Era, the Continuation of Our Mission

OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

After 15 uninterrupted years in print, with a constant monthly circulation and free distribution in Romanian communities across the Kingdom of Spain and other corners of the world, the physical edition of Occidentul Românesc will cease publication starting July 2025.

This decision, although difficult and deeply symbolic, is the direct consequence of a lack of financial resources. The major blockage was caused by the refusal of the Department for Romanians Abroad (DRP) to reimburse the outstanding amount from funding approved in 2022 for organizing a large-scale event in Madrid, the 3rd Edition of the Romanian Excellence Gala, which brought together 78 awardees from three continents.

The event was carried out at the highest level of professionalism, all requested documents were submitted, yet the reimbursable portion was never honored.

It is important to state that our funding requests for the newspaper have exclusively targeted the layout and printing costs of the publication. The editorial team of Occidentul Românesc has NEVER received salaries, fees, rent, or allowances from public funds. Our work has always been carried out on a voluntary basis, with responsibility and respect towards both the Romanian community and Romania itself.

Occidentul Românesc has been and remains an INDEPENDENT publication, sustained by conviction, respect for the dignity of the profession, and service to the Romanian community.

Our editorial activity will continue in digital format, with the same seriousness and public mission. The “Campaign of Romanians of Excellence in the West,” now in its fifth edition (2025–2026), will move forward as a symbol of honest work, genuine merit recognition, and good deeds done without fanfare.

We will continue to speak openly, with evidence, facts, and accountability. What has happened to us is not an isolated incident, but rather a reflection of a system that ignores integrity and discourages honest initiative, while instead fostering obedience and opaque arrangements.

We thank all those who have stood by us over the past 15 years: readers, collaborators, partners, friends, and especially our loyal subscribers from the USA, Canada, Portugal, Andorra, Gibraltar, the French Cerdanya, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, as well as from the Spanish regions of Extremadura, Galicia, Andalusia, the Basque Country, Asturias, and Aragon.
