The nomination of Mihai-Liviu Dănilă for the Romanian Excellence Trophy, within the 5th edition (2025–2026) of the Romanians of Excellence in the West Campaign, is not merely the recognition of a career. It is the confirmation that Romania still needs true benchmarks.

Sometimes destiny seems to write stories that even literature could not imagine. Life stories that cannot be described simply by listing biographical facts. They demand a deeper register, where facts and symbols intertwine. Mihai-Liviu Dănilă belongs to this rare category.

He was born in 1964, on a sunny autumn Sunday, on the Day of the Romanian Armed Forces. His life opened in a place steeped in history and spirituality: the present-day memorial house of historian Nicolae Iorga in Botoșani. Only a few church bells away, at the “Uspenia” Church, his life began under baptism in the same font that had received, a century earlier, the child Mihai Eminescu. Such a biographical coincidence can only be read as a sign: his destiny was to bind history to poetry, tradition to universality.

From his school years in Bucecea to his admission in 1979 at the “Ștefan cel Mare” Military High School in Câmpulung Moldovenesc, his path was marked by the discipline of the uniform. His military career, carried out over 38 years “under orders,” concluded in 2017 with the rank of brigadier general in the Romanian Air Forces, his final position being that of head of a central structure within the Ministry of National Defense.

This experience is not measured only in ranks or functions, but in difficult decisions, in the responsibility of leading people and organizing complex structures, in the permanent service to his country. For Mihai-Liviu Dănilă, the rigors of the army were not just a profession, but a true school of character.

After the uniform came another form of service: diplomacy. Between 2010 and 2024, he served as Minister Counsellor within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, specializing in the management of special emergency situations, international crises, and consular assistance. He became a TAIEX expert of the European Commission and, for a decade, Romania’s validation authority within the European Union’s Integrated Political Crisis Response mechanism.

In 2019, under Romania’s Presidency of the EU Council, he was honored with chairing the “Friends of the Presidency” working group, successfully closing all negotiation files. A moment that goes beyond diplomacy, reflecting the measure of a destiny devoted to both national and European interests.

Holder of a PhD in Military Sciences and Intelligence (National University of Defense “Carol I”), with an MBA in Strategic Management and Communication, and a graduate of NATO schools and European security centers, Mihai-Liviu Dănilă strengthened his expertise through elite postdoctoral studies. Yet all these titles were never mere steps in a personal career: they became instruments placed in the service of education.

As an associate professor at the Maritime University of Constanța, at the National University of Defense “Carol I,” at the Diplomatic Institute, and at the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” Police Academy, Mihai-Liviu has transmitted to younger generations not only knowledge, but also values: responsibility, discipline, and respect for profession and community.

His experience has long surpassed Romania’s borders. In 2004–2005, during the UN mission in Congo, he coordinated international military observers and led operational analysis centers. He also worked as a trainer on arms embargo and counter-terrorism issues, adding a pedagogical dimension to his missions.

Civically engaged, he is vice-president and co-founder of the Romanian Association for Culture and Security Education (ARECS), a member of the “Generals’ Club – Honor and Homeland,” of AORR, and of the “Pro Humanitas” Foundation. Through these roles, he proves that professional excellence does not remain confined within institutional walls, but flows naturally towards the community.

The Order of Military Virtue in the rank of Commander, the presidential decree granting him the rank of brigadier general, diplomas of excellence from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Health, and the Order of Masonic Merit of the National Grand Lodge of Romania are milestones of a career both confirmed and recognized.

The nomination of Mihai-Liviu Dănilă for the Romanian Excellence Trophy, within the 5th edition (2025–2026) of the Romanians of Excellence in the West Campaign, is more than a distinction. It is the confirmation that Romania still needs true role models.

Between Eminescu and Europe, between the military uniform and European diplomacy, between the university lectern and international missions, Mihai-Liviu Dănilă embodies an ideal of professionalism and dignity. He reminds us that excellence is not a privilege but a moral duty; not a trophy in a display case, but a life lived with meaning, responsibility, and respect for others.
